    Theft, MIP, Drug Paraphernalia
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Washington

I'm sixteen years old, and I was caught shoplifting a six-pack of beer from a local grocery store. Because it was alcohol that was being lifted, I was informed I would be charged an MIP along with the third degree theft charge. There was also a marijuana pipe in my bag that the cop found, which I am guessing is a drug paraphernalia charge. There was no actual marijuana found, but the cop seemed to be particularly interested in the fact that it "smelled fresh".

I have no previous charges. What are some likely consequences? Do I need to hire a lawyer to assure the smallest sentence possible?

    Thank you.

Yes, you need a lawyer. Your in a bit of trouble here with all 3 at the same time. If you have a drivers license, you can say goodbye to it, if you don't, you can forget getting one for quite some time. After your criminal proceedings are done, your parents can expect to be sued in a civil court for the theft. At the minimum, you have a mandatory 24 hr jail sentence for the pipe. At the very least, expect probation, 1 day in jail (juvie hall in your case) and some sort of drug intervention and drivers license for quite some time and huge fines.

Theft 3rd Degree is a Gross Misdemeanor and punishable by a maximum of 365 days in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Dirty paraphernalia possession, manufacture or delivery misdemeanor 90 days $1,000
Any convictions of a misdemeanor carry a 24-hour mandatory minimum sentence and a mandatory minimum fine of $250.
For subsequent convictions the possible prison sentence doubles.
Any conviction of a juvenile causes driver's license suspension for 1 year.

For the MIP:Persons under 21 may not purchase or attempt to purchase alcohol. Penalty: Maximum $1,000 fine, 90 days imprisonment or both. Plus license suspension.
