    Recording a Christmas Play
My question involves civil rights in the State of: Michigan

I have videotaped my son at a christmas play and posted it on myspace for all my friends and family to view it, because I am proud of him.

I recently had got a phone call from the school and said I had to take it down because there where other children in the video and I needed permission from all the other parents of the kids in the video (which is not very clear of a video) before publishing it.
The school did not have a problem with the video.

The christmas play was also not on school property, it was at a church that donated the use of the building for the play.
There was alot of people videotaping also in plain view just like I was, so everyone there knowing there child was being videotaped.

My question is do I have the right to keep the video online. I would be able to blurr out and kids faces if the parents of that child complained to me in person, but not just because the school said so.

I have tried searching for any info on this but everything talks about audio rights.

    Thanks in advance.

Out of consideration for the other parents, take the video down.

It's not like im advertising the video. Its on my sons myspace account, and the teacher only knows because they talk about myspace at school and the teacher happened to see it while looking at his page.
I told them I would set it to private, but do they have a legal right to make me take it down?

This is not a moral question. Yes I have taken it down.
    But can they make me?
No parents have protested agaist the video, the school is a small town alternative school and is just thinking if they can't post videos of school activies then no one else can.
Thats what she said " We can video kids without concent so You can't do it"
Even though it was in a public place, and I'm sure there are other videos online of the same play.

If you're asking if the school can have a policy that images of students should not be shared online without their parents' consent, yes, the school can have such a policy. It's conceivable that violation of the policy could result in disciplinary action against your son.

Anytime that unauthorized pictures or videos of children are placed on the internet... even when your intentions are as innocent as yours are... there is an "OH MY GOD" factor that comes into play...

If there is a single parent that freaks, any judge will demand you take it down as a safety measure... so, it is better not to do it at all....

making the video isn't the problem... as long as you don't put it on the internet..
