    Can My Boyfriend Be Emancipated
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Texas

Ok, so my boyfriend has a really crappy family life. His mom left years ago, and his dad is an addict. His dad doesn't hit him, but he gets drunk and yells at him and treats him like crap. My boyfriend can't stand living there any more and wants to kill himself. I have to save him somehow. But if we call CPS they'll take him to a foster home in Austin, Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio, and he'd rather die than go to a foster home again. He's 15, and turns 16 in May. I don't think his dad would let him leave. My mom would let him live with us, but I know my stepdad won't.

I've read some emancipation laws, but I don't understand them. Do you have to be living on your own to be emancipated?
Is there any possibility of emancipation for him? Or is there some other way to get him out of that situation? Please help, I am desperate.

Oh, teenagers. Ever the flair for the dramatic overstatement.

Hon, do your boy a kindness, and the next time he talks about "I'd rather die than do [whatever], I'll kill myself if I can't [whatever]", administer a good swift rap upside the head and tell him not to be such a drama queen.

You might want to give yourself a kick the next time you start talking about "saving" him, too. Heavens.

If he's being abused, his option is CPS. Period. Emancipation doesn't happen because your parents are asshats.

Yes. And working full time, paying all of your own bills, paying your own rent (no, living with your girlfriend does not count), continuing with school, buying your own groceries - in short, being 100% self supporting.

No more than the proverbial snowball. ESPECIALLY if he starts crying about wanting to kill himself. That's a sure ticket to MORE supervision, not less.

Ok, so he can't be emancipated...
but does he have to be 18 to get his own apartment?
Or does he just need his dad's permission?

If he has his parents permission AND can find a landlord willing to rent to him, fine. But even if he has the one, there's no guarantee he'll find the other.

And before you ask, yes, the landlords are permitted to refuse to rent to him because he's under 18. And most likely will.
