Defaulted Student Loan Federal (Went Defaulted 1990)
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Michigan

I have a crazy story and i need help to straighten it out finally..

In 1989 I wanted to be a welder and i went to a school to see what i needed to do..they said i need to apply for a pell grant/stafford loans and after i did ..i was told i needed a co-signer...well i went and asked my alcholoic father (who i lived with) if he would and he did..well some history of father..he hasn't worked in 40yrs full blown alcholic and received welfare while his parents paided for his house and everything the whole time..
I went back to school and it was approved ...ok i went to school then quit then went back and finished since i owed ...the school was a joke and after i could even get a job welding ...till later after i was taught by othe welders at job i had.

now the loan is with the treasury department and they take my wifes taxes she gets back some as injured spouse...she wasn't even arnd then lol...

anyways i work for cash (under table/ Self employed) and i avoid this since they have taken 16 yrs of wifes taxes and i have tried to pay a couple times but was kicked out of program bcuz my payment was 4 days later or something stupid..

So for 19yrs NOTHING HAS HAPPENED TO CO-SIGNER! this friggin drunk herited about 60 grand lol ...wtf..he has never recieved a friggin thing from goverment....I keep everything in wife/kids names to avoid bs....

I just want to clear it up.....i have written letters explaining stuff like i did hear but they still say its me and my 5000.00 loan is now 15.000 or so...

I think it should of never been approved in the first place and my co-signer was never checked out...

what can i do ....i want advice on legal help ..call them and setting up payments is useless .....can anyone help me?

And why should anything happen to the co-signer? The loan wasn't for him, it was for you, and it's your responsibility to pay it off.

The lender doesn't care that your father was a drunkard or that he inherited a pile of money or any of that. They've chosen not to pursue him, and they aren't legally obligated to.

You signed a contract taking responsibility for that loan, and you ran out on it. It's not your father's responsibility, and you've no legal recourse to make it so. Man up and pay your bill.
