Exaggerating When Making an Anonymous Tip
My question involves criminal law for the state of: NV

I filed an anonymous tip regarding an individual dealing marijuana. I exaggerated on the tip a little bit and the result was this person's house getting raided. The cops found a scale and some other paraphanelia, nothing substantial. Although I did not provide my identity at all in the anonymous tip I am nervous it may be tracked back to me in some way. Is it possible for the police to trace the anonymous tip? It was sent using online tip form on the website of a local police force.

i said he sold to an underage kid and he was not an active dealer and i said he is a active dealer. anyway that the cops can trace the tip? if so, wouldn't that ruin the whole concept of anonymous tips? do you even think there's reason for them to want to trace the tip? they did find enough illegal items to charge him with possession type offenses.

Yes, they can trace the tip.

However, anonymous tips are notoriously unreliable, so I wouldn't believe that they were using your tip as anything more than an excuse to get the warrant on a person they already suspected.

Well I said in the tip I wanted to remain anonymous because I feared revenge from the accused. Do you think I should be concerned at all?

If he/she finds out it was you that called, the police won't be to blame.

But do you think the police will try to trace the tip? I don't think they have any reason to.

    They have no reason.

    You are fine.

Jeff is right - police have much better things to do than mess with tracing a tip on a minor offender like this. In and of itself, your tip was very unlikely to be enough to create PC to get the warrant. Either there were other tips, or police were already working a case or had enough PC on their own without your info.
