17 Year Old Shoplifter in NYC

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
I am a 17 year old from NJ and I was caught shoplifting $116 worth of merchandise in a clothing store in Manhattan. I was detained at the site, handcuffed and brought to the police station, and they took my picture and fingerprints, etc. My parents came to pick me up and I got a D.A.T. from the police and I'm arranged to appear in court in a month.

A few questions:
1. Will I be tried as an adult or a minor?
2. I researched and saw there was sort of a diversion thing.. can someone elaborate?
3. Is it likely that this will go on my permanent record?
4. Since this is my first defense, will they be lenient? I have a 4.1 GPA and I'm in the top 10th of my class and I have community service hours. Will they look upon that favorably?
5. Top offense charged: PL 1654000.. what does this mean?

Stupidly, the magnitude of the situation just hit me today, the day after the arrest. I have to research this on my own because I don't think I can afford a lawyer and my parents are immigrants so they can't understand a lot of English. Any answers to my questions would be greatly appreciated.

These programs vary and are not available everywhere. Ask your Attorney

Likely? Its a sure thing!

Your GPA will mean very little

Sorry if my overwhelming stupidity is causing you to respond with terse remarks. Nonetheless, thank you for your time. Our family will be getting an attorney. I googled it but nothing specific came up.. I'm going to guess it means first offense or something like that.
