I was caught shoplifting and I just don't know what to expect. I have a call into an attoney to seek his advice. About a year ago my husband's job transferred him upnorth and it has been pretty tough since then. I know it's not an excuse to do what I did but I went into that store looking for shoes with the intension of buying them and when I seen the summer clothes on sale and new my kids needed them my mind started thinking. I keep bags in my car for when I take my dog to the park or anywhere for that matter in case he has to go to the bathroom and I have something to pick it up. Well I knew on the bags was a bag from the store I was in so I went out and got the bag and put the items into bags and left the store. The came out to my car and wanted me to take the items out of my car and come with them. They said they had me on tape doing this. Of course I was scared so I did. It was a total whim but they made it like I do this all the time because of the empty bags that were in my car for a couple different stores. Of course I said it was for my dog's poop but they didn't believe me.
I've never done this before and after this I will never do it again. I have a clean record, my husband is up north 6 hours away from me because of work and I have two school kids at home with me. I can't go to jail and I'm really worried. The officer didn't take me jail but he said I would need to contact the prosecutors office in a couple of weeks to see if they issue a warrant for my arrest.
I just want to know what to expect. Can my attorney help me take care of things without having to turn myself in? I looked up the different degrees of retrail fraud and I would be classified 2nd degree. Besides the charges from the prosecutors office can the store inself also try to get monetary damages from you? I just looking for what to expect and I now when our lawyer friend calls he can tell me but I am just so upset, embarrassed, so mad at myself. I don't want my kids or anyone to find out about this.
