Got Caught Shoplifting but Let Go
My question involves criminal law for the state of: NC
I am over 18 and was not in a healthy mental state when this happened. It was at a department store and the item was under $20. I was taken to a back room and was questioned. I supplied my ID and signed one paper saying that I admitted to taking the item. The loss prevention men told me what they usually do in these cases (ban from store, sued by the company to pay for their jobs, police involvement, etc.) For some reason, one of them decided not to go through with this procedure and they let me go. They told me that I was lucky because this never happens but now I am wondering if they will change their minds and contact me. They did take down some information from my license but did not say that I would receive anything in the mail. They also did not say that I was banned (although I am too scared to go back for a loooong time). I know that what I did was incredibly stupid and I have honestly never done it before! I also know that I was really lucky! Could anyone tell me if this could go on my record or if I could get a call/notice in the mail? Thanks in advance.
Re: Got Caught Shoplifting but Let Go
If the police were not called, the store may have decided to keep it internal, and thus you'd have no criminal record.
Don't get too comfy with that idea, though - they have up to a year to prosecute. If they choose to do so, you'll know it.

And they can still send you a civil demand even if the police are not involved.
