Getting a Record Expunged to Become a Police Officer
My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Nebraska
Hi, on Sept. 9th of this year my roommates and I all received Maintaining a Disorderly House for having a party. I am in the Pre-Trial Diversion program (court drops charges immediately, however if you get in trouble again they recharge you for the previous offense) for the state of nebraska and after I complete 24 community service hours and with no further law trouble the charge will be expunged on Sept. 9th 2010. I will be graduating with a BA in sociology in spring of '10. Will I be S.O.L. for being a peace officer if I apply during my last semester(spring '10)? Or will I have to wait till it is expunged later in the fall?
Thanks in advance.
Re: Getting a Record Expunged to Become a Police Officer
I don't expect waiting is going to make a difference either way, as law enforcement agencies can still see that charge, and in most jurisdictions you'll be required to disclose the charge when applying for a position as an LEO anyway.
On the bright side, people usually aren't barred from the Academy for getting busted for a house party.
