If you cannot afford a lawyer, then either plead not guilty or stand mute as your arraignment and request a public defender be appointed to you. If you quality, one we be assigned.
Pleading No Contest is not an admission of guilt but you will be sentenced according to the guidelines of a guilty plea.

Talk to your lawyer or public defender about diversion programs, if available, or HYTA.

So say I cannot get a lawyer... I should plead not guilty or stand mute and ask for a public defender. but say I am denied a public defender, do i straight up ask the judge for a HYTA or deferred sentence?

There is a process to see if you qualfiy for Public Defender do that first
