Caught Shoplifting in Sears Michigan
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan
I am a student 23 years old from India. I went to sears yesterday and was caught shoplifting a wrist watch a small perfume bottle from a pack of 6. The total cost is $72.00. They caught me infront of the store and took me behind and took a photograph and asked me to sign a statement after taking my passport information. I told that i dont have a social security number , though i have as a foreign national. The police came and asked me if i did anything before , for which i replied no. This is the first time i am doing anything of such kind and i am ashamed of it. Could you advice what would be the probable charges for this crime. Will it be reflected on my record as I did not give the SSN. I dont want to apply for jobs with a 3.9 GPA that has a criminal record, is there any way i could getaway without it. Do I have o go to jail. Will I be benefited if i approach a lawyer. I have to present before the court, next week.

You will not go to jail
Going to court without a lawyer would be seriously unwise
If you cannot afford an attorney, plead not guilty
and request a public defender
Your attorney/PD can explore available options
Re: Caught Shoplifting in Sears Michigan
thank you sir for the reply. Please advice me how much would it cost ti hire a lawyer for these type of cases. Also, is there a way i can come out with out a criminal record. thank you
Re: Caught Shoplifting in Sears Michigan
A lawyer at your own expense for this could cost a minimum of $1500
If you are unable to pay for a lawyer, you can request a Public
Defender at little or no cost

It depends on what deal your lawyer can get for you, there are no
guarantees
