Shoplifting in Arizona
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Arizona
Last week I was caught shoplifting at the local grocery store, it totaled $101.00. I was handcuffed taken to the bank, belittled by the security person and waited until the police arrived. I have a court date next Tuesday. I have also signed forms never to step foot in the store again.
I am on disability and was depressed and in a panic because my soon to be ex-husband has disappeared and I needed money from him for groceries and the electric bill.
I know it's no excuse, none at all, I've been taught better but I did it and now I'm scared half to death. I'm an idiot for thinking I could have gotten away with it.
Anyway, from what I have read, when I go in next week, I plead not guilty and request a public defender is that correct?
Does the judge that is presiding really take into consideration a person's reasoning for shoplifting at all?
Many thanks in advance.

A: Correct.

A: Your lawyer will discuss this one with you. But you have to remember that if the judge has been on the bench more than seventeen minutes, he/she/it has already heard every excuse in the book.

Re: I'm an Idiot
I did go and pleaded "Not Guilty". I was given a new date to appear before another judge and the Prosecutor. I asked the judge about a public defender and he said I will find out on the new date if I need one or not. Am I going to be crucified by the Prosecutor? :( What should I expect? Thank you.
