17 Year Old Daughter Wants to Be Emancipated
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Illinois.
My daughter is a little over 17 and does not want to live with me anymore. She has a part time job and is currently trying to find another. She is not doing well in school and I have tried to let her know that it is important. I should add that we have not gotten along in about six years.. it is not physical or anything but there is no respect and she does not follow my rules. She has told me she is going to stay with a friend but does not want me to know where she will be.. this is not an option for me. She has three brothers and sisters and here attitude bothers them as well as the way she treats me. I only want her and the rest of my children to be happy. I think as long as she is safe she will be ok. She has asked me about being emacipated.. what are our options?
Re: 17 Year Old Daughter Wants to Be Emancipated
She becomes emancipated by operation of law when she turns 18. Based on what you've posted, she wouldn't even come close to being granted emancipation by the courts, even if your state has an emancipation statute of their books.
She must be TOTALLY self-sufficient. This mean that she must provide for herself:
- Ability to pay for her OWN place to live including utilities, food, clothing (No $$$ handouts accepted)
- Provide her own transportation, insurance, etc.
Basically, everything that a responsible adult would need to do in order to survive.
