Emancipation in the State of Washington
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Washington.
I'm 17 and a senior in high school this year. I have a 3.7 GPA and am taking AP and honors classes. I plan on doing running start second semester so I can have time to get a job and move out of my house. I already have a place to live with some friends. The problem is, my mother no longer will allow me to move out.
I have been contemplating emancipation since before I turned 16. Once I turned 16, I had backup papers around constantly. My mother has a very large problem with depression, anxiety and anger. She emotionally and verbally abuses my step-father and I, and he is leaving her soon. This would leave me with her alone. Although I would only be with her for 8 months, my mother's non-physical abuse is now affecting my school work. She managed to lie to the administrators at my high school to get me in-school suspension. She tried to get me more. I cannot take the way that she treats and abuses me any longer, no matter how short a time period it it. I have been speaking with my school counselor and a psychologist at the hospital and they have both told me that it's time to get out.
I have the papers, but I'm wondering if emotional and verbal abuse is reason enough to get emancipated if my mother decides to testify against me in court? I have many adult contacts who would be willing to say that it would be much safer and healthier for me to move out.
I was also wondering for how long I have to have a job before filing for emancipation? At the moment, I am not employed but have employment opportunities lined up for when I move out. I cannot start working until I move out because my mother will not let me have a job because she knows I want to get emancipated.
Thanks.
