Is This Shoplifting?
I recently purchased a sweater coat at a store here in Michigan. When I got home, I realized that the belt for the sweater coat was missing. I returned to the store, but no one was available to help me, so I took a belt from another similar sweater in the store. I did make a seperate purchase at the store during my visit, but didn't alert the staff of what I had done. I was not stopped or accused of anything when I left with my purchase. I wanted to know if this would constitute shoplifting? And, if so, what is the statute of limitations of being prosecuted if I return to the store to shop for other things?

No it's not shoplifting but you didn't have to do all that. If you had your receipt and the item, it's a simple matter of going back, showing them you were missing a belt and getting it replaced.
