MySpace Harassment
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Massachusetts
I've been dating a guy for a couple of months now and out of nowhere he got a message from someone with a private profile on myspace who neither of us recognize, basically slandering my whole exsistence! The mystery person even made inappropriate statements about my job and my ethics and has threatened to tell everyone they know. I feel like this is like defamation of character or something. I have never experienced anyone being this negative towards me and all we can come up with is either of our recent exes being involved. What can I legally do about this and is there any way to find out who it is? I'm so upset and I have no idea what to do :(

Re: Myspace Harrassment
You can contact myspace outside of that you have no damages therefore no case

Re: Myspace Harrassment
I'm not looking for a case, just what i can do to protect myself incase it escalates. he's already got 3 emails and the last one was really nasty. i'm wondering if i file a police report if they would be able to find out who it is. I know they wouldn't do anything unless someone's property or life was in danger but, if it is my ex like I suspect I know he can get really violent and he has anger issues. I'm just freaked out..

Re: Myspace Harrassment
You get someone like me to track him/her down (I'm not looking for work but any hacker could find who is doing this.) They always leave clues. Once you find them you call the police in their town. If the police bite (and believe me they do heehee). The police subpoena myspace (which is just a technicality, my space will drop a dime on you in a heartbeat.) The police arrest them, I still find that hard to believe but they really do.

Re: Myspace Harrassment
I doubt that the police will be interested in investigating a complaint of, "an anonymous person on MySpace sent my boyfriend three emails insulting me." It's possible, but they generally have other priorities.
It's possible to commence a civil lawsuit and subpoena the account information from MySpace. From that, you may or may not be able to build a trail back to the person who opened the account or sent the emails. My guess is that with enough investigation you will identify the person. But it will typically be tough to do without hiring a lawyer.
