Moved Out Two Months Ago, Landlord Wants 1300 from Me
My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New York

My roommates and I moved out of our complex at the end of August. We were never returned our security deposit, which is a completely separate issue.
The complex is now claiming that we owe them $1300 dollars for replacement of carpet. We do know what they are referring to and would be happy to pay for the replacement of the room in question. When I called to ask how that one room would cost 1300 dollars for low grade carpet, they told me that they didn't have any of the original carpet and in order to make the apartment uniform decided to replace every square inch, which is about 3 times as much carpet needed to cover the one room.
I suppose I can see how I'm probably screwed, but does anyone have any reasonable advice for me in terms of what I can do? They told me there was no way to dispute it, so I put a call into their main office, which hasn't called me back.
This place has been nothing but trouble for me ever since I moved in and I just want this major headache to be over, but not to the tune of $1300.

Any advice/ honest opinion is appreciated. My apologies if this is not an appropriate question for this site.

They can claim the depreciated value of the capret, not full replacement value (unless you ruined a new carpet). I doubt that a court would uphold their claim that they must recarpet the entire apartment to make all the carpet perfectly match, as opposed to only recarpeting the room where you ruined the carpet.
