Credit Card Debt and Leaving the Country for Good
    State:California

I have various credit cards ranging from $2k to $15k from various companies. I have lived in US for past 10 years and had a very good credit standing. Due to family illness, I had to take most of my credit card money adn send it to India to repay the medical bill. I have around $40k-$50k of credit card debt and I have been paying most of the credit card bills regualrly through the autopay program.

This month I lost my job and I do not have any hopes of getting another one in the near future. I have no assets (except my car) in US and I am not a US citizen. I am forced to go back to India for good due to financial issues. Though I do not have any intention of not paying back, I am thinking of leaving US for good to assist my family with medical issues.

I am not sure what can be done against me if I can not pay back to these credit card companies?

    Can someone help

    Thanks

They probably won't do anything while you are in India (out of the country) or stay there.

I am sorry to hear of your problem.

The credit bureaus in the USA report on people who leave for Canada and the UK. If you are not comming back to the USA I really would not worry about it.

I never heard of a case where any US bank went to India to TRY and collect, which they cant do anyway. These amounts are considered small to most banks. They will just charge off the amounts and since you are not comming back I wouldnt worry about it.

I hope this all works out for you. Good luck in India. I hear GE money bank is hiring in India for customer service reps to talk to the US customers who call in. All their calls are re routed to India now. Which include all Walmart credit cards, Lowes, Jc Penny cards etc.
