Said I am Still Currently Employed, but I Am Not
My question involves a background check in the State of: New Jersey
I am applying for a position that requires a background check. I stated on the application that I was still currently employed because I was too embarressed to say I was let go 3 weeks ago. And although I checked the box that says that they can't contact my current employer...I'm concerned that they will somehow find out that I'm no longer employed. Is there anyway that they can discover my dates of employment at that company...if they don't contact them?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Said I Still Currently Employed.and Am Not
Some background checks could. But even if they didn't, the prospective employer is not legally bound by your request not to contact. Bad idea to lie on an application; many companies will terminate you immediately if you're hired and then they discover the lie.

There are a thousand ways that they could discover that you are no longer employed without contacting the employer. You would be astounded at the ways I have found out things about my employees and/or co-workers when I wasn't even looking for info about them.
Bad, bad, bad idea to lie on an application form. REALLY good way to get put in the do-not-hire pile; or worse, the fire immediately pile.
