Is it Illegal to Chat with Minor, with No Physical Contact, No Nude Images?

My question involves criminal law for the state of: NY (my residence) and Connecticut for minor

I am 24 living in NY.. I recently chatted with a teenager (16) on one of web messengars. The girl wanted me to say something "nasty" on mic but I did not. I had seen the girls picture's on social networkin site and commented on nice eyes (the images might have had cleavage)..
Now the question is:
1. Is it illegal to absolutely even chat with 16 yr old, I guess that is legal age in CT.
2. Does any picture of such teenager amount to porn ? I do not indulge in any sort of visual pornography although i do read stories, so I have no idea of "some cleavage" on teenager could amount to child Porn.
3. I was a given a link to the pics ( similar as i saw above) but it was on teen group, is it illegal to even reach them ?
4. And most important, since the person tried to cajole me into saying nasty line on mic, is there a chance it was undercover? to get me implicated?

Am trying to remember if anything I said was wrong, but i cant, i dnt have the chat transcript...
So the question in nutshell is, chatting to minor ( teenager) once, seeing some non-nude pics.. How big problem am I in if say the parents find out?

Why would you even want to buy this kind of trouble?

If she isn't a cop, she is a witness for the prosecution at your trial.

I tell you what. She is a minor. Get her parents on the phone and ask them how they feel about it.

If they say yes, tell them that you will provide them with a complete record of everything said or transmitted.

And then do it.

What? That doesn't sound like fun? Dating children isn't supposed to be fun.

Sure there's a chance that it's law enforcement; 50/50. But those aren't odds that I'd ever gamble with and neither should you.

Simply chatting is not illegal. However, you're walking a thin line here, VERY thin! One slip up, one sexual inuendo, whether "she" provoked it or not, and you've crossed that line. Stay away from the pics too, especially where a minor is involved.

My advice: Find someone your own age to chat with. You and a 16 year old have little, if anything, in common.

Its a mistake (which could amount to something even bigger) and I cant give any excuse now it has happened.. My hands trembled even writing *minor*, I cant give excuse but I was just asking if even this chat/ being online frnd is illegal.. I would never ask for photos (even fully clad) to older women, but it came up and so the question of what constitutes child porn.. I know it is not possible to answer these questions without judging the person ( i seriously do not think anyone can do it) but still if you could answer them, I would be grateful..

thank you both of you... I appreciate the response and I realise its all interpretations, nothing black and white and I suppose a slip of tongue is possibly all that is needed. K. thats actually forgetting its wrong to even start such a chat.. :(

Let's not get carried away here. I mean this is getting close to thought crime. If you didn't say anything sexual, I mean really didn't say anything sexual, why even ask? And even if you did can anyone think of a case that resulted in charges for just text chatting on the internet. I searched thousands of cases and never seen one. You'll know when you cross the line - there will be evidence. Arranging a meeting, engaging in graphic sex talk, sending photos, posting porno links etc.

Well the reason I ask is, it felt wrong. I have chatted with 19-20 yr old but still never exchanged *dirty words* (here i was pleaded to say 'hot bitch' which I didnt) or pics or asked for cam.. I didnt hide age or anything, because I was not going to say anything inappropriate..

that makes it basically : 24 yr old talkin to 16 yr old.. On the face value it sounds wrong so the question..
I still cant have normal sleep i guess..
Am trying to remember wht all i could have said..
If anyone still has a comment on wht happened i will listen..

It it only "feels right" when talking to children, you need to seek help.

No Sir.. It does not.. I meant it as an reply to earlier post (whr the person was telling me about how it could be a thought crime) .. I does not feel right, hence the post in first place.
It was wrong of me :wallbang: and thats what i wanted to say, whichever way you see (even if the dialogue was harmless) 24 yr old chatting to 16 will be always a problem, no one will ask me wht i said..
