Financial Liability in Annulment or Divorce Case
My question involves divorce in the State of: Ohio

I am currently a student, living totally off federal stafford loan. This is my last year in college, and will start job in July earning about $40,000. I will have about $150,000+ debt at the time. I have no earning at this point.

I had an egangement this past January in India, and engagement was registered as marriage by other party. I am not sure how they got it done, but purpose was for me to file immigration benefits for the girl and her family (me being U.S. Citizen). I refused and broke off engagement because I felt that I would be blackmailed even if I give into their demands. They are refusing to reverse paper marriage in India. I did file immigration file giving into their blackmail but subsequently notified immigration and withdrew the file.

We have never lived together. We never had any joint assets or liability. No intimate relationship. Basically, paper exists only on paper. I feel I still need to do something about it as she could come after 50% of my property 10 years from now based on this "paper marriage".

So, in Ohio, I have filed for annulment based on non-consummation of marriage. If that doesnt work, then I will file for divorce based on incompatiblity/1 year seperation.

What are my financial liability considering that I don't have any asset/income at this point, but do have great potential in the future? Can girl come and say that I interefered with her earning potential by not filinig immigration benefits and collect financial damage?

Please note that I am only concerned about liability in the United States. I have no intention to return to India or even visit India after this incident.

There are questions of jurisdiction here we can't address. It isn't clear that your "wife" has any connection with Ohio at all. If she does not, Ohio can grant you a divorce but cannot resolve other issues such as the division of your marital estate (such as it is) unless she consents to Ohio's jurisidction, or appears and doesn't object to jurisdiction.

I do not have any property to divide. I am student and pretty much have $0 bank balance, with no assets whatsover. If I get this marriage annuled/divorced, she can't come after what I accumulate AFTER the annulment/divorce. Is that correct?
