    Little Change in Last Name
My question involves name change laws in the State of NYS

Well, my son full name is Joseph Piter dos Santos. He is 4 now. On his brith certificate from New York has his last name as " Dos Santos". However, I would like to remove the "Dos" from his last name becoming then just "Santos". I could take it from the last name and put in the middle name so it will be Piter dos as middle name or just remove it. I just want his last name to be "Santos" and not "Dos Santos". How do I do that? Is that considered a name change or a mistake?

    Thank you.

You would best know if it was a mistake. Is that the name you gave them to put on the birth certificate? If you said "put Frank Smith" on there, and they put "Frank del Smith" on there, then that's a mistake.

If you told them to put that name on there and they put that name on there, then it isn't a mistake. So, you'd have to go to court and legally change your son's name. By the way, you might not want to go dropping your son's full name on the internet. ID theft is big nowadays, ya heard?

Thanks for the tip. However, I would have never done that. I made that name up. I just used that name as an example

    Thanks.
