Retail Fraud in Wisconsin
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Wisconsin
This incident happened today evening.
I was caught by a retail grocery store taking few items out of the store in my backpack. The value of the stolen merchandise was <100$. They confronted me outside the store and called the police. I completely cooperated. I was handcuffed and taken into custody. They took me to a police station and made me wait in a room for about 2 hours and then they fingerprinted and photographed me. I was given a ticket for retail theft with a total deposit of 424$. I paid the money then and there. I was told that I need not attend court for the the hearing is 2 months from now, as I have paid the fine.
I asked the police officers about the consequences of this crime, and they said that I might have problems getting into retail or law enforcement jobs in the future, but apart from that I should be fine.
Now my question is :
1. I do not intend to work in retail or law enforcements jobs ever as I'm an engineer, so should I worry about this.
2. If I just forget about it, and dont turn up at the hearing, which I may not as I have paid the ticket, what will happen? Will the court send any more notices to me?
3. How can this affect my stay in US, as I'm on a student visa in this country.
Thanks

If you were arrested and are going to court, yes, you should worry about it. A background check will show that you are a thief.

You would have an excellent chance of turning a misdemeanor into a bench warrant for your arrest for failure to appear.
You paid the civil demand. You still need to appear for the criminal charges.

This can be a hit against "moral turpitude".
