First Offense Shoplifting

My name is Jasmin and I am 20 years old.

I was caught shoplifting last week at a local clothing store. I have to admit that it was not my first time stealing though with all that has happened this past week it will most defiantly be my last. The total amount of the items taken is under 100 dollar. I’m absolutely sick with this and the fact that I am hiding this from my friends and family makes it that much harder. When I look back I’m glad I got caught, I might have gone years lifting things from stores. I am ashamed and feel paying my fines will help me further realizes the error of ways.

This is my first offense and I am relatively unfamiliar with what my options are. I read somewhere about a ‘diversion program’ is that only available to minors? I also saw that I might be able to get my petty theft charge dropped to a disorderly conduct. How would I go about doing this? I am nervous about the cost of a lawyer but if you think one would help my case then I will defiantly look into one.

I would suggest a lawyer at this point, you need to see what alternatives are on the table for you. If you can't afford a lawyer see if there is a legal assistance program in your area, they usually give cut rate prices depending on income and there is a public defender.
