    First Offense, Shoplifting
I was caught last sunday shoplifting at the infamous target. after a struggle to get cuffs on me(stupid mistake) by target personnel i was sent to go to the local police station and finger printed etc. i havent gotten any information on what is going to happen. i have found that target will fine me(for 20 bucks worth of merchandise) from previous posts,i might get community service or probation for this "assault" charge. what i want to know is what will happen to me and will this first offense ruin my chances for scholarships, applying for jobs(some in retail), and going to college and getting a "real" job with an expunged juvenile record?

    Your retail career is over.

You need an attorney... tomorrow. Stealing was bad. Assault was worse.

You don't say how old you are... but if you can be charged as an adult, these charges could be around your neck forever.

How do you feel about working in a paper hat?

Then start selling your stuff on ebay.

A good attorney to get you out of this will be in the neighborhood of 5 grand.

I was assuming it was a first offense... though with multiple charges.

That will cost around 5 large.

This is not the end of the world; don't let the folks on here scare you with "you'll have to flip burgers for the rest of your life." That's simply not true. Firstly your juvenile record will be sealed once you turn eighteen, so you can tell jobs you have a clean history; secondly, most jobs ask about convictions within the last 5-7 years only--thus the background check agency is not allowed to report anything else. Also, this should not interfere with college admission too much. Many schools don't even ask about a criminal record and, even if they do , that doesn't mean they automatically won't accept you. A law shool will certainly ask about convictions; an applicant for a state university into ,say, the English department won't have any trouble with a criminal record. (what the hell does a criminal record have to do with getting an education, anyway). There are high school teachers with minor criminal records, for heaven's sake! Trus me, I know this for a fact.

Please, all you folks on here stop exagerating the consequences of misdemeanors and scaring the posters.

Oh, so you feel comfortable in hiring a 15 year old with a theft and assault conviction?

You should send him your address.

Criminal record checks are very important in an education career in a number of ways (I say this as the husband of a teacher).

Sex crimes, assault and various other crimes of questionable judgement and action should be look into for anyone that wants to teach our children.

Again, if you don't care, give the nice OP the directions to the school where YOUR children attend.

This is not about you or me; this is about the poster and the real world. many times jobs and schools do not ask about convictions of a certain nature or beyond a certain date; therfore, anything outside of their stated scope is none of their business. Criminal backgrounds should have nothing to do with college admissions unless you are applying to law or med school. No one should be denied an education because of a prior indescretion or mistake. I am a highschool teacher in Los Angeles, by the way, so don't lecture me about education. Plenty of the kids in my school wind up with criminal records. So according to you they loose the right to go to college and move on with their lives?? Would you say this to your kid if he/she got caught for something petty and stupid? Ideally, colleges should not even have the right to ask about convictions. Don't people deserve to move on after they have completed the sentence of the court? Why should they be punished further, especially for something petty like shoplifting?

I've got news for you: there ar a lot of folks with bullshit minor convictions in the profesions. I know of two personally that are very successful and good in their professions. But I guess according to you they should be flipping burgers for the rest of their lives because they stole a bottle of deodorant when they were twenty!

It feels good being a keyboard commando, doesn't it?
