Your taxes may pay for the operations, but you do not get to say how they are conducted so long as they are conducted within the law.

Sorry, I mistaked this for a democracy. :p

And, I don't send my child out for two reasons: (1) my oldest is too young, and (2) when he is old enough, if he doesn't want to, he doesn't have to. We do them so rarely, and we have sufficient volunteers that I don't anticipate he'll ever even be asked about it.
    I see...

We're a republic. And the old tired line of "I pay your salary" doesn't mean you have a DIRECT say in operations. I shop a lot at Wal-Mart - that doesn't give me any direct say in their practices, either.

If you do not like local cops using minors in cigarette stings (which means that they could not even DO cigarette stings), then pressure the local government overseeing local law enforcement to forbid tobacco stings.

    Carl....

When they do these stings, do they have to wait until the minor has possession of the products before crashing the party?? Or is just the willingness to sell enough?

In CA the sale has to be made.

The minor will walk out of the store with the goods, and the officers then move in for the citation.

Same here in Michigan. I must add that in my son's cases, all 3 of them, never once did the clerk ask for ID. He asked for a pack of cigarettes, paid for them, then left the store. No fake ID's were used with any of the participants with regards to this 'sting' operation.

Do you guys even know how stings work? They well run and within the law. Also if the clerk asks for id, they produce a valid id which says they are underage. The police take every precaution when they do this.

Many retailers also send their secret shoppers in to do this as well.

Get a clue, it isn't like they just slapped this program together and put the kid on the street.

I'm also trying to recall the last time I received a report of anyone being beaten or injured trying to buy cigarettes, and I just cannot recall it ... hmm ...

For the under 18 crowd, it is far safer to be involved in a sting than operating a motor vehicle. Perhaps we ought to allow them to do the cigarette stings but not to drive?

    It's still entrapment.

    Legally, no, it's not.

Unless the decoy went in and handed the clerk a $100 bill for the cigarettes, the defense of entrapment does not exist in decoy ops.

How would 100 dollars make any difference?
