Caught Shoplifting in New York
A friend of mine was recently caught shoplifting in a shop rite and was taken to a room where the security guy asked for his driver's license and took down the information. He then told my friend he could either pay a 75 dollar fine right there or get a summons in the mail to go to court. My friend paid the fine and asked whether or not anything would be sent to his house in the mail. The man said nothing would be sent and that he would be allowed back in the store, but if he shoplifted then they would call the cops and he would be placed under arrest. My question is, does my friend have anything to worry about or can the security guy have filed a report with the police and should he expect something in the future?
Re: Caught Shoplifting in NY
Your friend should be okay. VERY LUCKY! Hopefully he got a receipt for the payment. Don't go back in the store or he will be arrested. The store has until the statute of limitations runs out to file charges against your friend (usually 2 yrs) but it's not likely that this will happen unless they return to the store and give them a reason. Tell your friend to stay out of the store and not to shoplift.
