    But then, I would not expect an unemployment office to be satisfied with, "I'm actively seeking a job because I just blasted my résumé to a bunch of listings on Monster."

    Well, not quite like that, but my state is okay with that.

    They send you a form called "WorkSearch Activity Log" which you have to complete on a weekly basis. You list, in the spaces provided, the date you make the contact; the name, addresss and phone number of the employer/agency/service; how you make the contact (in person, phone, mail, web, and fax are specifically listed at examples) and the results ("Pending" is an acceptable response. Responding to an ad on Monster is a perfectly acceptable method of conducting a search.

    Again, in my state, which is not the poster's. Or Patty's.

    You're hardly limited to the information that Monster provides. It only takes a little effort to Google up the company you've applied to and find the HR person's name - either on the company home page, via answers.com, via Hoovers, or about a dozen other ways.
