    Bike Stolen from Public Library
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Iowa. My sons bicycle was stolen fom the public library. He did not lock it. The bike sat there for 2 hours as he kept checking on it. The library director moved the bike out of my sons view. :wallbang: He had checked on it and it was not there so he asked the libriarian and was told the director moved it. In the mean time someone stole the bike. There are no signs posted regarding where to put your bike, etc. Since an employee of the library had moved the bike resulting in the theft, what responsibility does the library have? Thanks in advance for your time.

You can put in a claim to the library for the cost of the bike, but I doubt that they will pay it. You can then try to take them to small claims court and see if you will prevail.

If the director moved the bike for a valid reason, I cannot see that they will be liable for your son's failure to lock the bike up. If he moved it to prevent your son from observing it, that might be a different story ... but I seriously doubt that will be the case.

This is one of those life lesson things that can be used to teach the importance of securing one's property from theft.
