Can I Be Emancipated In Washington?
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: WA
I turned 16 in March, got my GED (scored high) and started college classes. After summer I will have 30 credits. I have a job at the local grocery store as a courtesy clerk earning minimum wage, and have had it for a month. I also have a bank account which I have had for two months, and had one at a previous institution that I had for over three years, but switched because I needed some of the services at this bank. If my parents do not protest, what are the chances of my petition being accepted? How long does the entire process take?
Re: Can I Be Emancipated In Washington?
Doesnt matter you only worked one month hardly proof to court you can hold a job. By the way how many hours do you work a week and will work once school starts

Right now 30-40 hours, 36 hours last week, and the deductions are about 1$ off every I earn. If emancipated I assume I could work a normal work week, since that is not under the exceptions for adult privileges, thus I would be working the same hours.
Re: Can I Be Emancipated In Washington?
You've only been working a Month, a Judge wants to see long standing work history.
You also more importantly have to be able to prove to a Judge why this would be in your best interest. Just having a job isn't the only requirement.
Doing a search of areas in WA, I've noticed that the price range for a 1br/ efficiency apartment is not lower than $400.
Assuming you'd continue to work Full-Time hours, $8/hr your monthly income will be $1280 BEFORE taxes. Since you'll be attending college soon, you didn't mention if it was full time or part time, but you'll have to figure that into the scheme of thins also which could bring your monthly gross income down even lower.
It's not as easy as you seem to think it would be.
Re: Can I Be Emancipated In Washington?
Judges also dont work with hours you "assume: you can work
Re: Can I Be Emancipated In Washington?
Lets work with $400.00 rent and $950.00 a month bring home pay
Rent $400.00 (by the way whats security deposit?)
Gas for car $300.00 (guess)
Groceries $200.00 if you eat really cheap
Car insurance $100.00 if cheap insurance
Phone (landline) $30.00
Untilties (gas elect etc) $50.00 bare min if you hardly use them
Cable TV $50.00 (Basic service and very low est)
Cell phone $50.00 (again bare min)
Internet $20.00 for cheap dial up
By the way does you employer have Health insurance? If not add that cost
This quick list that does not include everything is already $1200.00!!! that exceeds your monthly bring home!!

Alright, at 8$ an hour, 40 hours a week, I would be earning a gross of about $1280, and a net at roughly 1100$. Let me make my own list:
Rent: 400$
Fiber Optics Internet: 40$
Voice over Internet Protocol: 20$ unlimited long distance
Utilities: 50$ (Electricity here is 1/3 what it is in the next county, second lowest in the country, garbage I can easily take to a dumpster somewhere free)
Food: 200$ (That's not eating THAT cheaply, our family of four lives on less 400$ a month)
Cell Phone not necessary to start, I have no interest in TV.
I cannot drive, and will use the bus/walk, so
Monthly bus pass: 12$
I come up to 722$, leaving me with excess of 300-400$ a month, to cover any discrepancies in my budget and to save.
Re: Can I Be Emancipated In Washington?
Your take home will be less than 1100.
Where are you going to come up with at least 1200 to move into an apartment?
No, you can't just take your garbage to a dumpster for free, that's considered illegal dumping.
You didn't say how much you'll pay to wash your clothes.
You'll need school supplies.
You didn't mention medical insurance.
What will you do in the winter, will have the money to heat your place?
You didn't figure in bathroom needs, shampooo, deoderant, soap, toilet paper.
You really just don't get all that you have to pay for, there are a lot more things that you will NEED and it will add up fast. A judge will most likely want to see you're making and bringing home well above the poverty level of income for your state. Showing him that you can work, maintain the job and not be burden on the astates taxpayers.

As FH notes you left out several important items none of which will fit into your own budget you post here

Based on what is deducted now I will be earning roughly 1100 net off of that. Garbage you can add in a little more, our family has not had a TV for as long as I can remember, and have gotten by without it. I can watch whatever I want online with fiber optics. Student bus pass is 12$ per month at the community college. So even with the extras, like heat in the winter, medical coverage, etc., I still come out ok since I had that extra 300-400$.
I am not here to debate the details of a budget, but I am confident I can live off of what I make. I also have a job offer to make 10.25$ an hour, but I have to move for that. I just want to know what I have to do to convince the judge that I can fully provide for and take care of myself. Will personal references, school references, etc., help? If I move out and live on my own for a month or two before hand will that improve my chances?

You will not have the choice to debate your budget.
The judge will demand it.

I know but right now I am looking for advice on how to go about it.
Re: Can I Be Emancipated In Washington?
You have been given that info several times
Re: Can I Be Emancipated In Washington?
What if I just move out for a few months first? How hard is it to do that without being emancipated? How many papers will I come across that need to be signed by my parents? Can someone legally rent to me, or do I have to funnel it through an adult/parents?
Re: Can I Be Emancipated In Washington?
If your parents allow you to move out, you can do so.
No landlord has to rent to you and most likely won't being under 18 and having a short work history. No landlord has to rent to you even if you were emancipated.

Are you planning on...
Going to school?
Going to a doctor?
Going to a dentist?
Getting a driver's license?
Getting a job?
Then you need your parents' signature(s).
