Public Intoxication: Drunk in Public Class B Misdemeanor

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Va.

Early Friday morning approx 1230am my friend was hit for no reason as we didn't even know or talk to the assailants. I went to protect him and got hit twice in the both eyes. The assailants ran. I never even threw a punch, just tried to wrestle them to the ground. Anyway the bar manager stated to the cops we were attacked. I then informed one of the cops the waitress knew the assailants and she denied it. The cop said he knew the waitress. I then repeated that we saw her talking to them. The cops never asked for us to identifify the suspects. I thought we were the victims. Because I said I thought they should investigate all of a suuden I'm told put your hands behind your back. Public drunkenness. I did have a few drinks but was upset more at getting attacked and was in shock of the lack of police inquiry into who hit us. I did have a couple of drinks but only been out for an hour and not drunk. No prior convictions on my record and I am a young CDR in the military. I do have a detective trying to find out who the assailants were to press charges. What do u think?
