Shoplifting In Pennsylvania
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Pennsylvania
My friend and I were caught shoplifting at Macy's in Natrona Heights. It was stupid, there is no excuse. The security men were very kind to us when they took us back to their office. They took our information and said that a civil demand would be made. The store manager was also there. They said the police would not be involved considering this was our first offense, and that nothing would happen as long as we didn't have a record of shoplifting before (and we don't have a record of previous shoplifting). However, they gave us a white envelope that would be sent straight to Macy's Loss Prevention. According to them, if we paid our fine within 14 days there would be no other letter sent to us. They also said that we would be required to visit a one time class costing $60.00, and that it would be over with.
Since I filled out the white envelope, and paid my fine, I've been waiting to hear from the person running the class.
1.) Will they send me anything back saying they have received my fine payment? Has anyone else experienced this?
2.) Does this mean that we will get off free (not completely considering the fines) as long as we follow through and complete the class?
Re: Shoplifting/No Police/Civil Demand/Class
You will probably not get a criminal record, but you will still be entered into the National Theft Database.
this is the database shared by thousands of retailers. Basically, it is meant to find those people that steal so that they are not hired.
Re: Shoplifting/No Police/Civil Demand/Class
I have never heard of a retailer demanding some sort of class. that sounds pretty silly. just pay the fine on time. as far as the class goes, they do not have the right to make you attennd any class whatsoever.
Re: Shoplifting In Pennsylvania
Does anyone know if they send any sort of notification once your fine is paid? Remember, they gave us the envelopes that enabled us to send the fine payment straight to the loss prevention place. Since they flat out told us they didn't want to take us to court, that after the fine was paid there wouldn't be a civil demand letter. I'm just worried that they will send a notification of the fine payment in the mail...
