Going to Court but Want to Settle Debt Before Court Date
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of Michigan. I am scheduled to go to court in a month for a summons I received on a $4800 debt from Citi Bank. I have already answered the summons stating I agree I owe the debt but disagree on the amount. In return, they sent me a stack of old statements showing what I owed.
1) Should I Get a Lawyer to handle this?
2) I can pay half the amount to settle the debt. How do I go about making that offer to settle so I dont have to go to court?
3) If I go to court by myself, what should I expect?
I am clueless on what to do here, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Going to Court but Want to Settle Debt Before Court Date
You can call the creditor before the court date & see if they will accept settlement for a lesser amt. or if they will set up a payment plan with you. However, they don't have to do either of these. If nothing is resolved before the court date, you do need to go to court or they will get a default judgment against you.
