FERPA and Dual Enrollment
My question involves education law in the State of: NC
In this coming year I will attend a high school and several colleges. I am a minor so I have a few questions.
What information will my parents have access to? The Department of Education listed rights that the actual text of FERPA do not state.
If I leave for a residential high school, leaving all colleges, may I instruct the school to release no information to my parents (allowing me to act on my own behalf) unless pursuant to FERPA they prove to the school that I'm a dependent?
Do I now have the power to sign up for courses without the school having to have my parents permission (because that would mean they would need access to information they aren't entitled to) or that I can sign my own progress reports that would typically be required of my parents to sign?
Thanks!
Re: FERPA and Dual Enrollment
Until you turn 18 or go to college, your parents can access your records. FERPA is actually pretty clear on that:
Residential high school is still high school, your parents are indeed still entitled to the information.
Re: FERPA and Dual Enrollment
The residential school isn't the real issue. I'll be a college student and a high school student, how does that change my parents rights? I read somewhere if they show I'm a dependent they can access the information, do I still retain my rights as an eligible student if that's true?
