Washington and Florida Emancipation Law
(Two different people)
In the state of Washington, I am a legal resident.
- I am 17.
In the state of Florida, my boyfriend is a legal resident.
- He is 16.
My boyfriend moved from Washington a few months ago, and is wanting to move back up to Washington. He has parental consent, but would like to get an apartment, in his name, and able to get a job, and retain all of his earnings. I am wanting to be emancipated, so that I too can move in with him, and continue going to school, and get a job, and retain all my earnings.
In neither home are we treated differently, harshly, or anything like that. We just feel we can both support ourselves, and no longer need the support of our legal guardians (both meaning our parents). How would I go about doing this? I've been doing research for sometime, and see that there are forms to fill out, and certain rights we gain, and rights we lose by attaining emancipation, but what exactly can we/can we not do, in order to be emancipated?
Obtaining Orders of Emancipation
In Florida, your boyfriend's parents would petition for his emancipation, asking a court to issue an order emancipating him. In Washington State, you would file a petition with a court asking that you be emancipated.
