Slanderous Neighbors
My question involves defamation in the state of: NY
I have been living next to neighbors for the last 17 years that I believe have crossed over the line and I need to know my rights. These people have been harassing us, invading our property by constantly watching us when we are on our deck, watching people who visit our home by pointing and heckling them, and overall just trying to make us miserable.
We recently put on a deck with a pool and things have become worse. Apparently jealousy is the root of the problem for these people. On Saturday we put in a new fence, since this particular neighbor broke the last fence, and this neighbor refused to let the men on his property. My husband finally went out and spoke to him and he gave my husband a litany of things that he doesn't like about us. He finally relented and the fence went up.
Now, he has been going around the neighborhood telling everyone had we had to "beg" him to put up this fence and other slanderous remarks that neighbors have told me he has said. I am livid. What rights do I have to not have to be harassed like this!

Re: Slanderous Neighbors
What damage have you suffered to your reputation?
What monetary damages have been incurred? Have you lost your job? Been kicked out of a club? Are your kids being bullied at school?
No?
Your neighbor is a tool. When other neighbors bring him up, roll your eyes and change the subject.

Re: Slanderous Neighbors
As Missy asked, what damages have you suffered? There really isn't anything you can do except just ignore them & their comments (or move - I'm sure you don't want to do that). Maybe you will be lucky & they will move (though doubtful if they have been there 17 years).
