Hyphenating My Children's Names
My question involves name change laws in the State of: Arizona
I would like to hyphenate my childrens names with their current name and hyphenate with their step-fathers. such as John Doe-Smith with Doe being their biological fathers last name and Smith being their step fathers. I would like to do this because it has become very hard to prove that i am the parent. My last name is not the same and it isn't hyphenated. Going to the doctor, getting medical records etc school and after school programs. I feel that it would be much easier to have their names hyphenated. As far as the biological father is concerned, he has voiced that he doesn't have a problem with this. Is this something that i can do with out having to go through an adoption process? Is it legal? What are the steps to start the process?
Thank you

Re: Hyphenating My Children's Names
If their father cooperates with the process, it shouldn't be too difficult. Instructions are here. You may be able to find forms specific to your county on your county court's website, or at your county courthouse.

Interesting. I have a child with a different last name and have NEVER had an issue with Doctors, teachers or any other official. Interesting.
Re: Hyphenating My Children's Names
I also find this very interesting I have 2 children with a different last name and I have never had any problems from their school, doctor, or anyone else. I hope all works out for you.
Re: Hyphenating My Children's Names
Very interesting, just like Bay and Autumn, I had a child with a different last name and I NEVER had any problems because of the difference in our names.
OP, what kind of problems have you run into?
I ask because if your ex does not agree to the change, and you end up in court, I'm sure that a Judge would want to know how it has caused YOUR CHILD any problems.
Re: Hyphenating My Children's Names
I have never had any problems with my son's name being different from mine. He has been in the hospital numerous times, school, doctor's, etc. He is 12 years old and the only issue I had was when the teacher's called and asked for Mrs. Walker (my son's last name), which is just a irritation...not really a problem....
Re: Hyphenating My Children's Names
Up until 6 months ago, my child and I had different last names. For 12 years, I've never had 1 problem with him having a different last name.
In fact, I've never known ANYONE to have a problem with having a different last name than their children, especially with the divorce rate hovering at 60% - with a significant amount of those 60% remarrying...
