My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan
When I was 19 I was convicted of retail fraud. Although I was facing a felony (b/c it was over $400 worth of merchindise), my lawyer was able to get it down to a misdemenour.
I am now 28 years old and was caught shop lifting $65 worth of merchindise yesterday. I was arrested and am now facing Reatil Fraud II charges.
Is it in my best interest to get a court appointed lawyer? What are the chances I will do jail time? I've done some research and see that this crime is punishable by 1 year in jail or $3,000 fine. Any chance the judge could reduce this?
I've owned my own home for over 7 years, I've worked full time for the same employer for 9 years and have stayed out of trouble for 9 years. Will the judge take that into consideration? Am I considered a habitual offender?
Any advise you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thank you!
