Caught By Camera?

Well I have a friend who stole a camera from a store. It was in plain view also. He just took the camera and ran away as they chased him to the car . The licence plate was covered.

So my question is, could he be caught by the footage? And what are the odds?he was wearing a hat and glasses also.

If they got the license plate, they can probably get him. Since you say the plate was covered, he should be fine. Running to your car is the worst thing you can do so he should probably think of a different escape plan if he plans on shoplifting again (not saying he should but he'll probably wanna push it to the limit since he got away with it this time).

Tell "your friend" he probably should stay away from that store for awhile so he doesn't get recognized.

thanks for your reply. It really is my friend. The reason why I'm so worriedis cause we do everything together so ibwas just wondering. It was a camera store with the cameras behind the counter so there isn't any other way

don't be so sure that your friend got away with it just because he covered his plate. there have been cases where other methods have been used by the police to discover thieves. the trend among small retailers these days is to post theft surveillance video on youtube with a reward. many thieves have actually been caught this way. by the way, if your friend is caught for this, it is possible that the DA could consider this robbery/burglary instead of just shoplifting. your friend showed clear intent to commit a felony by covering his license plates, and that's all they need (intent) to charge this as a felony.

theft from small retailers is even more reprehensible than theft from the big corporations. your friend is a great guy.

I think you need to find a better and smarter class of friend. Hat and glasses? ya, that prevents anybody from recognizing him. Tell that to all the bank robbers caught on camera setting in prison that thought the same thing.

on top of that, a car can be recognized by means other than the plate. That merely prevents them from using that to find your friend.

what are the odds? How would they find you? Out of thousands of people

there are a lot of folks in jail and prison that felt the same way.


there are often pictures taken from the camera footage and distributed to other branches of the store or I have even seen such distributed to other brands of stores.

We are not Vegas odds makers.

Your friend is lucky that I am not on his case. I would catch him. We are trained you know. Most cant just run away.

I have had grab and runs before, mostly from drug stores (my area of law enforcement). They all get caught, youd be surprised how few actually get away. The jails are full of people who thought they can get away with crime.

I think you'd have a better chance at assessing the odds than any of us would. I would say if you live in a town of 500 people, they'll catch him. If you live in L.A., I'd say the chances are just about zero.

Well, if they are not wearing gloves and possibly touch the counter, sure, then I would have a print. Again, I am dealing with drug offenses here, so even if in LA or NY, I would sure do my best. Most do not commit the perfect crime.

Now in this post his friend stole a camera, if the police dust the counter and find a print they have something to go on. Caught on video, well in time that can come back to help as well.

Know what? I had a lil disagreement with SENIORJUDGE on here yesterday over something like this (dealing with a minor). Now I am starting to think he is right and I am wrong.

I guess we are never too old to learn.:(

OP wants us to tell him he has good chance he got away with it! We cannot say. Most of his post are nothing but asking for someone to tell him he wont be arrested. Again we cannot do that. Dusting for prints on a shoplift is very very unlikely. Once more sorry OP but we cant play guessing games and even if we do it wont change the outcome

Well this may be more then a simple shoplift charge. The value of the camera is not stated. Is it a $10 camera? a $2500 camera?

He sure went through alot of trouble to conceal his plates on his car etc, I dont think we are getting the full story here.:eek:

Ok, so he is old enough to know better. See the problem is, he takes this $2000 camera. OK, lets say he gets away with it.

Now that was easy, so next week he holds up a Bank. Crime is never a one shot deal. It is alot like potato chips, once you have one, you want another and another.

The best route is NEVER to start in the first place.

Most serial murderers start with somone killing a cat or a bird, next it is a dog, then a person, it gets worse and worse. See my point??

Wow...$2000, you'd think the store would have it in a glass case or something to prevent grab and runs? Anyways its already been stolen all you can really do now is wait and see what happens...keep a low profile though, definitely don't go back to that store and hopefully your friend doesn't do anything stupid.

If you were driver and they have reason to believe you were in on thef tor had knowledge expect to be arrested

The time to worry is before you commit a crime. Now that you have done something like this let it be a lesson to you. NOT to do anything like this again.

Is it worth being up all night to worry about if the police will show up to come get you??

No camera, or any amount of money is worth it, I hope you learned your lesson.:confused:
