    Minor Charged With Grand Larceny
My question involves criminal law for the state of: NEVADA

I am 16 (17 in August) and I was caught shoplifting from Macy's in Las Vegas.
I have a spotless record except for 1 HOV Violation which will not go to court until September. I'm a straight-A high school student in a dual-credit college program where I'm a full-time college student while still in high school. I'm an award-winning violinist on both city and state level. I've also represented the state of Nevada at a world-class music/arts camp. Also, I've recently been accepted to the Nevada Youth Legislative Issues Forum. Not only am I an exceptional student and violinist, I also hold a full-time job.

I'm facing Grand Larceny. The total amount for the merchandise I stole was around $530. I told the police officer the reason I stole the items was because I had to help my mom pay the bills, car insurance payment, and I was going to sell the clothes online. My acting out was actually a result of my insecurity and my false sense of superiority to my insecurities (I had a long, hard, and ultimately successful talk w/ my Mom.) However, I realize that none of that is an excuse for my actions. I displayed low and disgusting behavior and I will take my punishment without objection.

This is a first-time offense and I'm a successful high school student at both school, violin, & work. Is there are chance that I can be "pardoned" or sentenced with a misdemeanor instead? I was reading up and my understanding is that a felony (grand larceny) will not be sealed after I'm 18. I'm worried that my future has been ruined.

Any and all advice and information is appreciated. I've never been in this type of situation before. I'm not able to get a lawyer and I don't deserve one. I'd just like to know what to expect before my court date, Jun 10.\

    Thank You.

    Interesting, but not relevant.

    .

    That's relevant.

Is this a lie or the truth?

Are you a licensed social worker and/or mental health professional? Then your diagnosis doesn't mean a great deal.

Try to avoid saying this kind of stuff in court. It makes you sound pretentious.

    Good.

This is your first offense. It might be able to be bartered down with the services of an excellent attorney.

However, you have to be prepared that future employers could manage to see this action.

Some actions have lifelong consequences. Felony Grand Larceny is such a crime.

    You need an attorney.

Ask for a public defender at your next court appearance.

You're charged in juvenile court, right? Read this brochure (PDF).

Quoting terms: Will my child have a record?
Juvenile records are automatically sealed when the child reaches the age of 21. Or, records can be sealed earlier upon a child or probation officer’s request three years after the child’s last adjudication or referral to juvenile court (whichever is later).

Additionally, juvenile records may not be opened by anybody unless they get a court order and the court finds they have a legitimate interest in the records. There are exceptions for traffic violations that go to the DMV and if, as an adult, the division of parole and probation need the information to prepare a sentencing report for the adult criminal courts. There are also exceptions to both of the above categories if the juvenile delinquent act is a sex offense.
