Roommate Left And Is Not Paying Portion Of Rent
My question involves a roommate in the State of: North Carolina

Me and an 'ex-friend' both signed seperate leases on a duplex in Raleigh. After 2 months he lost his job and instead of searching for another one would just sleep in his room until 4pm daily. I covered his portion of the rent because I had no choice due to my name also being on the lease; but this was on the notion he was going to pay me back. Then he ran into some trouble with the law and was forced to move back home with his parents in Greensboro. I then lost contact with him because he refused to pick up my phone calls and I had no idea where his parents lived. This went on for a couple of months until finally I remade contact with him and he came back to Raleigh for a weekend. I wrote up a promise note stating he would pay me back around $500 a month, which was the sum of past money owed as well as monthly rent, beginning April 20th ending September 10th. I thought everything would workout because at the time we signed the note he gave me $200 in advance to show he was making good on his word. He then was late on his "first payment" and then my worst fear became true again, I could not make contact with him. The Rent is $750, therefore $375 each. What are my options to regain the money owed. My landlord only accepts payment in money order, and i have kept the receipts of those money orders. I would also like any advice on what I should do for the remaining months on the lease if I am not doing enough to keep proof for when I will have to sue him.
