    Withholding money shortages
I work for a tribal casino in Oklahoma. Due to the nature of the work, there are often variances in our daily reconciliation.
It is common practice for employee drawer shortages to be taken from their paychecks.
    Is this legal?
Also, our time clock is set up on 15 minute intervals. Our supervisor demands we clock in exactly 14 minutes early for our shift. Even though we are technically "on the clock" we are not receiving compensation for those 14 minutes. This amount of time is small, but when considered over a year's time, they add up. We have been threatened with disciplinary action if we do not comply.

Typically, deductions from paychecks must be made with the consent of the employee. I am not sure whether there is an exception which might apply to an Indian employer on a reservation, or which might otherwise be operable under Oklahoma law. It is possible that you agreed to the deduction as a term of employment when you took the job.

From what you say, you are being required to work without pay for that period of time. That is not proper, and is something you should discuss with a lawyer in your state who handles employee-side wage and hour litigation. The lawyer can also advise you as to whether the deductions for drawer shortages are legal.
