My question involves criminal law for the state of: Oklahoma
On Tuesday night two friends and I loaded in on of their trucks and drove to a local gas station, where I hopped out and stole a twenty-pack of beer, along with a six pack. We left and went home and had a great night of drinking, etc. etc. Two days later though a police office that knew me through high-school called me and told me that they had us on camera stealing, and that I should come in and speak with another officer. Which I promptly did. He sat me down at a table, had me discuss with him what had happened, and I made a statement. He told me that it is punishable by a maximum of a $5000 fine and six months in county jail, which is a pretty much devestating prospect to me at this current time. Seeing as how it would ruin all chances of me getting in the University I want, and not to mention six months in a county jail.
The officer I spoke with said he was reporting it as a mis-demeanor, however I believe this is subject to change if the judge deems it so. Thus my question is for anyone who has been in a similiar situation, or knows someone that has, what the results may be? And what is likely to happen. I just turned eighteen on April 25, so this all pretty much sucks. Of course my lesson is learned, I understand how stupid an idea it was, but we were just drunk teenage boys in the country. No excuse, but it happened, and I'm prepared to deal with the consequences, but I would just like to know what other people might think is going to happen based on past experiences, or a friends experience.
The gas-station is pressing charges against all three of us. So how likely is it that I will serve jail time?
