Retail Fraud / Shoplifting: California Petty Thief

I stole around $110 worth clothes and my friend was around $200.
we got caught by the store guards and we cooperated when they asked.

Our records are clear.
we are 18 yrs old.
my friend had a knife for her protection (she works late at night and has to take the bus... so..)
we removed the tag not to get caught all of those clotes.
it was our first time...
we really regret what we did...
And... when store gaurd asked us about the id.. I said no.. But I had it in my wallet... ..... and they found out that I lied about that I have a id in my wallet. does it affects my crime?

-we went to police station and we were there about 6 hrs. They did not ask any questions, but we print the finger prints and signed some of the papers that I don't know what those signitures were for...

I just want to know what would happen to us, and do we need to get public defender or something? I'm really scared... what happens at court?
I know for sure that it would be written in my record. but is there any chance to get those records down? I have to go to college... and I need to get a job... I feel pity myself... I can't believe I became a criminal...
the court date is in end of may.
