    Step-Parent Adoption in New York
My question involves adoption law for the State of: NY
I have a 9 year old daughter that my husband of 4 years wants to adopt. She calls him dad, and he is the only dad she has known. I have a step-son, a son, and a daughter on the way with my husband. We all have the same last name, and my daughter wants it too. Her "donor" is not on her birth certificate and she has my last name. I know I need to get paperwork from the courts for my husband to adopt her, but what happens when you don't know who the father is? I don't have a long list of men that I was with or anything. It was more of a first date "issue" and he gave me a fake last name. It wasn't exactly voluntary.

Each state has it's own laws governing this type of situation. The best thing to do would be to get a consult with an attorney to find out if your state requires you to make an attempt to find the bio-father before beginning adoption proceedings.
