Minor Name Change In Texas With Deadbeat Dad
My question involves name change laws in the State of: Texas
My son is four years old and he is autistic. He is named after his father who was abusive during the marriage so I got a protective order granted against him. I am named sole managing conservetor in the divorce papers, but he does get visitation. The problem is that he refuses to believe there is anything wrong with my son and refuses to have anything to do with him, including both visitation and child support. I want to change his name because of this. I don't necesarily have to change his last name, but I want to change his first, middle, and drop the JR. from it. How do I do this? Do I have to have his dad's consent? If so, is there any way around it?

Dad has just as much say so in naming of child (or change in this case) as you do.

Okay, I can deal with that. So, I have two questions...
What exactly is the deal with being sole managing conservator?
How do I start the name change process? I am aware I will have to send notice to dad.
Thank you. Your help is most appreicated.

That's Texas' term for sole custody. Meaning you have the right to make decisions re: the child's medical care, education, child care, etc.

Go down to the courthouse and file a petition.
