How Do I Evict An Ex-boyfriend That Refuses To Leave?
    State: California
Time: 1.5 yrs (does not meet commom law req)
Basics: I own the house. I let him move in. I broke up with him, and want him to leave.
Rent: He was paying me some rent. I am no longer accepting rent.

If I am unable to finesse him out of the house, do I need to simply begin the 30 day eviction process? Or are there other options available to me?

Yes. You must serve him with a 30 day notice to leave, then begin the formal legal eviction process.

Continue to collect rent. This will not work against you. As LRM states give him 30 day notice to vacate.
