Breaking Lease
My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: North Carolina
Hey, I signed a lease for my current residence through November of this year. I have had some repairs that I requested to be fixed and they were never taken care of. My refrigerator went out, they came out and fixed it, then it went out again and it took 2 days for them to get out and replace it. Due to this, I lost all of my food ($250 or so) that was in there. Not too long after that, the refrigerator began leaking and caused ponding of water in the floor. I have slipped, my children have slipped, and my fiancé has slipped while he was holding our infant son. I called the realtor and asked for this to be fixed and all they said was it cannot be fixed (although it could have been either fixed or replaced because it didn’t start until this new refrigerator). I also suspected molding in one of the bathrooms and asked for that to be looked at (it was making my children sick) and they said that I would have to pay for this. I am breaking my lease next month and wondered a few things.
First, since I’m breaking my lease, do I still need to give a 30 day notice? I don’t want to give a notice and they try to do something to kick me out before then
Second, will I still be responsible for the remaining months on the lease since I couldn’t get these repairs taken care of?
Thirdly, if I am responsible, what can they really do to me? I will be filing for bankruptcy in a few months so any financial problems attached to my name will fade away with that. A former friend of mine said that they told her (because she went running her mouth to them) that they would take me to court if I broke my lease. Wouldn’t that just go away in the bankruptcy anyway even if I am in the wrong for moving out.

Re: Breaking Lease
You should contact an Attorney as this matter normally has a procedure to follow to remedy these problems.
