I Want To Join My Family In The States
I am a UK Citizen and this is my dilemma...

My half-brother has lived in the States for almost 15 years and is a Permanent Resident. My Mother also lives there and is on her way to becoming a Permanent Resident as well (my step father is a US Citizen).

My boyfriend lives there, he is American too!! They all live on Maui.

I have no family in England and, as my brother has recently had kids, I want to join both he, my boyfriend, and my Mum over there. Naturally...

I hear that there is a huuuuge backlog of applications, should my brother change his status to citizen and sponsor me. And waiting for my mother would also take too long.

I am 28, have a degree, professional qualification in journalism and two years full-time experience of this work. I also have a wealth of experience in the hospitality industry.

I want to move to the states as soon as I can. I just want to make sure I do it the RIGHT way.

What would anyone advise? Do you think a H1 visa would be possible, given the relatively small jobs market on Maui, or a J1 perhaps? That would at least be a short-term fix.

If not, are there any more ways in which your family members can sponsor you?

I hope this makes sense! Any advice would be most gratefully received.

You probably should try to find a job for which you can get an H1B visa, as you are not prohibited from seeking permanent residency while in the U.S. on an H1B visa.

I can't speak to your chances. I can only wish you luck, and suggest that (at a minimum) you consider the other islands as well.
