Caught Shoplifting At Sears In New York

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York

I was caught today shoplifting from Sears. I was out of the store and in the parking lot when two guys came running up to me and made me go into the office. It as a stupid prank and I stole some shoes. Also they said I stole other things in my bag because there was no receipt so the total was $215 worth of things.

They called the sherriff station which is locate din the mall and they came and took me down to the station and finger printed me and took a picture. I was given a summon.

What should I do? how does these cases usually work out? I just turned 18 last nov. this is my first time and I am in college right now and I don't want any of this to show up on my record! please help!:wallbang:

You need a criminal defense Attorney to see what options you have. I will guess Diversion might be off the table due to dollar value but ask

thanks for replying so quickly. Should I ask for a public defender? How much would it cost to get an lawyer for a case like this? the cop at the station said something about how I can just plead something ( i can't remember what he said, it's basically a not guilty) and I can get off without a conviction, but with just a violation and it won't be on my record since it's my first time and all. If you have any info or can point me to a place where i can get info, that would be awesome. All this for a stupid frat prank. thanks for the help! i am really grateful!

If you can afford an Attorney you will qualify for public defender. Based on what has been posted her I will guess an Attorney for a case like this (with simple plea bargain) will run from $1000.00 to $2000.00

Do you know how you can qualify for a public defender? Also I was finger printed and my picture was taken. What was all of that for? I wasn't arrested or anything right? Since they just let me go and never read me any rights

You were arrested you were cited and released. You request a Public defender on your next court date.
